Nach 31 Jahren Ehe verläuft die Beziehung von Kay (Meryl Streep) und Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) nach starren Regeln. Auch seitdem die inzwischen erwachsen gewordenen Kinder aus dem Haus sind, haben sich die beiden 60jährigen nicht wieder angenähert. So also war das, wenn man in der DDR aufwachsen musste und ohne rechte Überzeugung Mitglied in den staatstragenden Jugendorganisationen wurde,
weil man einen höheren Schulabschluss machen wollte. Claudia Rusch berichtet sehr anschaulich von den Hindernissen, die man in der DDR zu
überwinden hatte, als habe man beim Erwachsenwerden mit sich selbst nicht ohnehin schon genug zu tun.
Und von der Langeweile, die die begabte Schülerin in den sozialistischen Bildungsanstalten ertragen musste
(freilich: das gab es natürlich auch im Westen!).

Manchen hätte das verbittert. Nicht so Claudia Rusch, die natürlich auch eine ganze Menge Glück gehabt hat.
Ein Glück, das man sich selbst gewünscht hätte, war beispielsweise die Direktorin, die die Schullaufbahn der gelangweilten Querulantin rettete,
indem sie ihr erlaubte, sich während des Unterrichts in ihre Privatlektüre zu vertiefen. Zuvor waren, wie die Autorin glaubhaft macht,
"Heerscharen von Lehrern" an ihr gescheitert. "Meistens versuchten sie es durch Isolation: Sie setzten mich allein auf die hinterste Bank,
sie setzten mich allein auf die vorderste Bank. Es half nicht. Ich quatschte, ich raschelte, ich störte. Natürlich -- ich langweilte mich.
Es war ein Problem. Wir alle waren unzufrieden und ich hatte Schuld."



Doch nicht nur aus der Schule plaudert Rusch. Ebenso unterhaltsam erzählt sie von dem Alltag in der DDR, von der Jugendweihe,
vom schwierigen Verhältnis zur Banane und zu Schokoladenriegeln aus dem Westen, von der Stasi und deren Spitzeleien,
von dem befreienden Gefühl gerade in dem Moment amtlich erwachsen zu werden, als der DDR-Spuk endlich ein Ende hat.

"Es kommt nicht in jedem Programm vor, dass im Verlagshaus einhellige Begeisterung für ein neues Buch besteht", heißt es in einem Brief des Lektors an
die Presse. Doch genau dies sei bei dem Buch von Claudia Rusch der Fall gewesen.
Und tatsächlich -- auch wenn es nach einer abgegriffenen Floskel klingt: Meine freie deutsche Jugend ist ein wichtiges (und ein vergnügliches!)
Buch über die Realität des Sozialismus in der DDR.
